Finding oil spots under a parked vehicle can be both worrying and stressful for any vehicle owner. If the seal’s leak is small, oil may start to accumulate on the underside of the engine. But as the leak gets bigger, the oil leak will become visible in the front side of the engine.

Garter springs are generally used when the lubricant is oil, as it provides the necessary downward force to maintain a tight seal. However, when grease is the lubricant, garter springs can often be eliminated. Due to its low viscosity, grease doesn’t require as much downward force to maintain an effective seal.

However, when you actually select the oil seal to use, the most important factors are past success history and points of improvement, so it is not necessary to follow this order to the letter.

Assembly problems with the oil seal?

Because the inner diameter of the oil seal must be stretched during assembly, it is necessary for the shaft to possess a ramped edge. The angle at which the ramped taper should be chamfered is 30° a 50°. If a flange or keyway is present on the shaft, it is best to use a bushing. The bore should also have a chamfer of 30° over at least 1 mm on the ramped side. Be sure to round off the edges properly in the process.

When installing a 38x52x7 oil seal, it is important to ensure that the seal is properly lubricated and aligned with the shaft. This will help to minimize friction and wear, and extend the life of the seal. It is also important to regularly inspect the seal for any signs of damage or wear, and replace it if necessary to prevent oil leakage.
