  • What are Oil Seals?

  • When a seal is angularly misaligned – or cocked on the shaft – an irreversible process begins. Excessive pressure on one section of the seal, when not installed properly, can cause the spring to become dislodged or the seal to heat up and become brittle through excessive wear, both leading to a premature failure.

  • Shaft Speed: The speed at which an oil seal can operate effectively depends on the previously outlined conditions together with the design of the seal itself. Some designs allow for a range of maximum peripheral speeds and are therefore more suitable for larger shaft diameters. Speeds below and above the recommended range can cause friction and thus impact the sealing material.
  • 4.  SHAFT SPEED: As different shafts move at different speeds you need to consider the runout, the housing bore, and oil type being sealed. Ensure you select a seal that will not suffer from abrasions or spiralling.

  • When the oil seal material and the chemical are not compatible, there will be a chemical attack, which increases at high temperatures. The only way to remedy this is to select the right material for your application. If you’ll be dealing with harsh chemicals, choose oil seals that are made with reliable materials for their compatibility.

  • The material of the sealing lip is chosen according to the liquid to be sealed and the rotational speed. For larger shafts, an NBR sealing lip can cope with surface speeds of up to 10-12 m/s, while an FKM lip is suitable for speeds of up to 35-38 m/s.
