Food additive nanoparticles could negatively affect your gut health, by Jillian McCarthy, Binghamton University, May 4, 2023
- Another top titanium dioxide manufacturer has earned a reputation for its focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility
- Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) is a widely used white pigment in the manufacturing of paints, plastics, and coatings due to its excellent whiteness, opacity, and chemical stability. It is also used in sunscreens, food packaging, and other applications where its whitening effect is desired.
Application:
1. Due to its rheological and optical properties, Lithopone offers technical and economic advantages wherever organic and inorganic resin systems need to be relatively highly pigmented for specific applications. Lithopone has therefore traditionally been used in putties, mastics, jointing and sealing compounds, primers, undercoats and marking paints. In powder coatings it is possible to replace TiO2 partially, very economically.
2. The low Mohs' hardness of Lithopone leads to low abrasiveness in comparison with TiO2.
3. Lithopone 30 % (= 30% zinc sulfide share) is proven to be of particular use as a TiO2 Substitute in thermoplastic masterbatches. Even at very high pigment loadings it disperses easily. A masterbatch containing 50 % TiO2 and 25 % Lithopone 30 % DS has the same hiding power as one containing 60 %TiO2. Cost savings are strongly related to the price ratio of Lithopone and TiO2 and the price of for example polyethylene or polypropylene.
4. The Lithopone batch has a much higher extrusion rate too. Furthermore the impact strength of many thermoplastics such as PP and ABS can be noticeably improved by using Lithopone as a TiO2 substitute. Generally spoken, Lithopone can be used at loadings up to 80 % by weight without causing polymer breakdown
In order to contribute with experimental evidence that could help to achieve a better understanding of the field for future regulation, in the present work, the biocompatibility of commercial P25TiO2NPs (one type of TiO2NPs used in sunscreen formulations) and two novel functionalized P25TiO2NPs were evaluated under solar simulated irradiation. White light, generated by red, blue, and yellow LEDs, together with UV ones, was chosen to simulate the solar spectra. Functionalization of TiO2NPs was made with antioxidant vitamins in order to prevent the expected photo-initiated ROS production when nanoparticles are exposed to the simulated solar spectra. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin C were chosen to carry out the functionalization because they are water-soluble, low-cost, and are a constitutive part of biological processes. In addition, it is known that both have the potential to prevent macromolecular oxidation by ROS [23], [24], [25], [26].
R-5568:
The titanium dioxide market fluctuated in the first two quarters of 2023. These pricing patterns resulted from poor demand and reduced intakes from the downstream industries. Amid the slow demand, the manufacturers were forced to reduce their outputs. With rising inflation rates, production cuts gradually increased. Given the economic downturn, the labor strikes further affected the market dynamics, thereby exerting pressure on the pricing fundamentals.
There are two primary forms of titanium dioxide commercially available: anatase and rutile. The rutile form is typically used in sunscreens due to its superior ability to handle UV rays and stability in the presence of UV light. The anatase form is typically used in other types of products, such as paint. Another plus of the rutile form is that its UVA protection extends past 400 nanometers, which is the upper limit of UVA.

Wegman’s puts titanium dioxide in its Original Macaroni and Cheese. Campbell’s Healthy Request Chunky Chicken Corn Chowder has it, as does Food Club’s Chunky New England Clam Chowder. Marzetti uses the color agent to brighten its Cream Cheese Fruit Dip. Dairy products usually don’t need titanium dioxide to look white, but Kroger has decided to add titanium dioxide to its Fat Free Half-and-Half. And titanium dioxide isn’t only in especially white or brightly colored foods: Little Debbie adds it to Fudge Rounds and many other products. According to the Food Scores database maintained by Environmental Working Group, more than 1,800 brand-name food products have titanium dioxide on their ingredients list. That said, it can still lurk as an unspecified “artificial color,” or labels might simply say “color added.”
FDA guidelines:Americans are eating too much salt. So the FDA wants food manufacturers to cut back on sodium.

According to data released by the China Coatings Industry Association, the total production of China's coatings industry has increased from 12.72 million tons in 2012 to 24.388 million tons in 2019, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.7%. Coatings, as an intermediate commodity, are closely related to downstream consumer markets such as the automotive industry, real estate, infrastructure, and home furnishings.
