While sateen sheets are similar to satin sheets, they aren’t to be confused with one another. The satin weave structure (one under, three over) creates sateen sheets, but yarn is used rather than filament fibers. Despite the differences in material, sateen sheets are just as elegant and silky smooth as satin. They are less durable than percale sheets but also better for cold sleepers and cooler weather. 

How sheets are weaved has a direct influence on how they feel to the touch. Percale is lightweight and tightly woven, resulting in crisp, cool bedding. In contrast, microfiber's super-tight, dense weave makes it wrinkle-resistant, extra-soft, and water-resistant due to its super-tight, dense weave. Other weaves to consider are satin, which is ultra-soft and glossy, and flannel, which has a warm feel ideal for chilly weather.

Microfiber is a good option if your budget is a little tighter and, as it's wrinkle-resistant, it's perfect if you're not a fan of ironing. However, it might not be the first choice if you're looking for an upscale aesthetic.

The most common constructions are muslin, percale, sateen, flannel, and knitted jersey.^[4] In a plain weave the warp and weft cross each other one at a time. Sateen has multiple (usually 3–4) over threads and one under.^[5]

Cotton and cotton blends dominate the market, the most common blend being cotton/polyester. Cotton provides absorbency and a soft hand, while polyester adds durability and wrinkle resistance.^[2] Other common fibers used in the manufacturing of bed sheets include linen, silk, Modal and bamboo rayon, lyocell, Microtex or Microfiber, and polypropylene. Polypropylene (olefin) is a hypoallergenic spun-bound material produced at a low cost and typically used in emergency shelters or hospitals as disposable sheeting.

According to National Geographic, the first known mattress dates back to around 77,000 years ago. It was discovered in South Africa in 2011 and was made of reeds and rushes. Researchers believe that a ‘top sheet’ made of insect-repelling greenery was used to help ward off the unwanted night-time visitors.

Duvet covers often have buttons, ties, an envelope flap, or zipper as a closure to keep the insert enclosed. It should be noted that a Duvet is the insert that goes inside the Duvet Cover; usually comprised of down or a down alternative. When the insert and duvet cover are together, sometimes it is referred to as a Comforter. It is common for Duvet Covers to have finishing details like flanges or embroidery along the side and bottom edges only.
