In addition to withstanding high pressures, oil seals must also be able to withstand the harsh conditions often found in industrial settings. This includes exposure to oil, chemicals, heat, and vibration, which can all contribute to the degradation of the seal over time. Proper selection of materials and regular maintenance are essential for ensuring the longevity and reliability of high-pressure oil seals.

On engines that rotate anti clockwise (viewed from the front) the pulley bolt unscrews clockwise.

Fluid Types - Various oil seals are able to withstand interactions with oils, fuels, grease, water and more. Knowing what type of fluid the rotary shaft seal will be in constant contact with will ensure the longevity of the seal and surrounding components.

Oil seals are made out of nitrile synthetic rubber with steel stiffener rings. Other rubbers such as viton, silicon, neoprene or poly acrylic can be used for specific applications. The stiffener rings may be stainless steel or brass where highly corrosive fluids are to be sealed. Springs are generally made of spring steel to IS: 4454:Gr.ll or from stainless steel or bronze for corrosion resistance

Most oil seals consist of some basic elements that configure their structure, such as the sealing element, the metal case, and the spring:

FKM or FPM, which is in well-known brand Viton™, can withstand higher liquid temperatures of up to 180 ˚C. FKM is highly resistant to strong acids and bases, as well as to synthetic oils and greases. Glycol-based oil and grease, however, can also damage FKM.

Oil seal type or shape

It is generally used in the union of two lubricated parts, so that it hermetically seals both sides. Therefore, it guarantees the proper engine operation and helps to maintain the vehicle’s distribution system in better condition.

Carboxylate Nitrile 

Oil seals are often called grease, fluid, or dirt seals. These seals close spaces between stationary and moving components in mechanical equipment. Oil seals are designed to prevent the escape of lubricant. They also block contaminants from entering machinery. This is especially important in severe environments where heat and foreign objects may be frequently present. They also prevent the mixing of different mediums like lubricating oil and water.

Metal case The metal case provides rigidity to the seal, helping it settle on the housing securely. It also ensures easy seal handling and mounting.

6.  AMOUNT OF LUBRICANT: Seals perform better when lubricated but some machines will go through some dry spells. When this occurs using a leather or PTFE seal will be more beneficial as those type of seals can operate with less lubrication.
